Summer is a great season for vacations, fun in the sun and playing in the water. However, it will bleach your car’s interior, cook a roast to medium on your dashboard, strip a paint job and in states like Arizona melt your tires to the asphalt.
Don’t believe me? Consider this: Asphalt absorbs 95% of the sunlight in a day and will raise 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the current temperature. The rubber from a tire melts at 250 degrees, but softens at a lower temperature. This means leaving your vehicle in the sun for 8 hours can create soft spots in your tires, resulting in future blow outs. A car in the sun will act like a greenhouse, getting 10 to 20 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Always heard, don’t leave your pets or children in a car in the sun with the windows up? After 90 minutes in 90 degree weather, your car’s interior is a whopping 138 degrees! It only gets hotter throughout the day. Weather.com has an interesting slide show about this. http://www.weather.com/newscenter/specialtopics/slideshows/hotcar061909.html?page=5&scheme=image-horiz-plain.css

It is no surprise that sun takes a toll on your paint job. The darker the car, the more your vehicle soaks up the sun. Here is a study done at Meguiar’s Garage on vehicle under the direct sun and their color. Note the change in degrees of heat absorbed. http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?24930-Working-in-the-sun-How-HOT-does-your-car-s-paint-get
Finally, my favorite example of the sun’s heat…I have used it before, but it is truly a classic for me. The, “I cooked my pot roast in my car because it was so hot I could.”
